Diverting Waste from Landfill

Every small change you make can reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill, helping conserve resources, reduce pollution, and protect the environment. Here are some practical tips:

  1. Recycling

Make sure you’re separating recyclables from your general waste. The more you recycle; the less waste ends up in landfill. The following items can go into your yellow-lid recycling bin

  • Paper & Cardboard including Pizza Boxes (ensure cardboard boxes are flattened and placed loosely in the bin)
  • Steel & Tin Cans
  • Aluminium Cans, Trays & Clean Foil
  • Rigid Plastic Containers, including Lids
  • Glass Bottles & Jars
  • Milk & Juice Cartons
  1. FOGO

Instead of throwing food scraps and garden waste away as general waste, start putting them into your FOGO Bin! These materials will be turned into nutrient-rich soil and compost, which is great for gardens. The following items can go into your green-lid FOGO bin:

  • fruit & vegetable scraps
  • take away food
  • meat & bones (raw or cooked)
  • bread, cakes, pasta & rice
  • loose tea leaves & coffee grounds
  • spoiled food (removed from packaging)
  • eggshells, eggs & dairy products
  • flowers and herbs
  • seafood (shells, bones)
  • grass clippings, leaves & small branches
  • compostable liners (limited)
    1. Compostable bags (provided by Council AS4736) or purchased according to our Compostable Liner Guide
    2. Paper towel (limited) used to collect and transfer food waste to the FOGO
  1. Switch to Reusable Products

Reducing single-use items is key to diverting waste from landfill. Invest in reusable shopping bags, water bottles, travel mugs, and food containers. Not only do these items help you reduce waste, but they can save you money in the long run too.

  1. Repurpose and Repair

Before you throw things away, see if they can be repurposed or repaired. From clothes to electronics, many items can have a second life with a little creativity. Repairing broken items rather than replacing them reduces the need for new resources and decreases waste.

  1. Choose Second-Hand Goods

Rather than buying new items, consider shopping second-hand. Thrift stores, online marketplaces, and charity shops are full of pre-loved items that still have plenty of life left in them. Purchasing second-hand helps keep items out of the landfill and reduces the demand for new products.

  1. Educate and Inspire Others

Diverting waste from landfill doesn’t just benefit you—it benefits everyone. Share your journey with friends, family, and neighbours, and inspire them to divert waste as well. The more people involved, the bigger the impact we can make on our communities and the planet.
