Plastic Free July
Plastic Free July is a global initiative that encourages everyone to reduce their single-use plastic waste. Every year, millions of tonnes of plastic waste end up in landfills — and that’s a big problem.

Why it matters:

Plastic doesn’t break down easily
Unlike food scraps or paper, plastic can take hundreds (sometimes thousands) of years to break down. Instead of decomposing, it slowly breaks into smaller pieces known as microplastics, which can leach into the soil and waterways.

Landfill space is limited
Landfills are not a long-term solution. As we continue to generate more waste, space is running out. Plastics take up valuable room that could be avoided with better waste practices and recycling habits.

Environmental and health impacts.
As plastics slowly degrade, they can release harmful chemicals into the environment, affecting our ecosystems and potentially entering our food chain.

Missed opportunities to recycle
Many plastics can be recycled and given a second life as new products. When they go to landfill, those resources are lost forever. Worse, some plastics contaminate landfill gas systems or interfere with landfill operations.

What can be recycled through your kerbside recycling bin?

What can you do?
✅ Reduce your use of single-use plastics
✅ Recycle correctly and consistently
✅ Choose reusable options where possible
✅ Support plastic-free initiatives and packaging alternatives

Together, let’s keep plastic out of landfill starts with smart everyday choices.
