Recycling Tips
With the holiday season upon us, you may find that you have an excess of cardboard, household recycling and soft plastic packaging.
Wollongong City Council will be providing FREE Cardboard and Soft Plastics Drop-off events across the LGA this December. Check out here for details of your closest event.
You are also able to drop off excess recyclables to Wollongong Waste and Resource Recovery Park for FREE. The Wollongong Community Recycling Centre (CRC) is accepting free drop-offs of additional recycling. For more information on what can be taken to the CRC, visit our website.
Can I recycle my wrapping paper?
Do not place metallic or glitter wrapping paper and excessive sticky tape in your yellow Recycling bin, this will need to go into your red Waste bin. Large pieces of plain wrapping paper can be scrunched into a ball and recycled in your yellow Recycling bin, along with paper envelopes and cardboard packaging.
FOGO Tips
All food waste, garden waste and compostable bin liners can go into your FOGO bin (just make sure your bin lid can close). This includes:
- ham bones
- seafood and shells
- plate scrapings
- real Christmas trees (NOTE: Fake Christmas trees belong in your red Waste to Landfill bin)
What can I do about food scraps and prawn heads smelling in my FOGO bin this summer?
Put the food scraps and shells into a FOGO bin liner and place in the freezer. You can then put this entire frozen FOGO bag into your FOGO bin on collection day.
General Waste Tips
Looking to declutter these holidays? Rather than disposing all of your old items in landfill, consider what else you can do with them!
- Donate good quality items to an Op Shop or charity
- Sell or give away on an online marketplace or garage sale
- Visit the CRC to recycle household problem waste items (See here for more details)
- Investigate local recycling initiatives such as Big W’s Toys for Joy, Officeworks E-waste and Stationary Recycling and MobileMuster
- Book in a Household Clean-up Collection (You are entitled to 2 collections each financial year)
What do I do with my polystyrene packaging?
Polystyrene can be placed into your red Waste to Landfill bin. If you have an excess of polystyrene, you can take this to Community Recycling Centre to be recycled for free.
